Product materials
Our silver pieces are solid 316L stainless steel throughout.
Our gold pieces are 316L stainless steel finished with an 18k gold PVD coating. PVD (physical vapor deposition) is a vacuum-bonded surface finish. It is substantially more durable than conventional electroplating, but it is a surface finish and not solid gold, and we describe it as such throughout this site.
"316L" refers to a marine-grade austenitic stainless steel alloy commonly used in surgical instruments and medical implants. References to "surgical steel" on this site refer to this alloy specification.
Durability and tarnish claims
Statements that our solid steel pieces "will not tarnish" describe a property of 316L stainless steel, which forms a self-repairing passive chromium oxide layer and contains no components that oxidize under normal wear.
These claims apply to solid stainless steel. They do not extend to the gold PVD finish, which may show wear at high-contact points over years of heavy use.

Hypoallergenic claims
316L stainless steel is widely regarded as suitable for people with metal sensitivities because nickel is bound within the alloy structure rather than present as a surface coating, resulting in minimal transfer to skin.
